Description
This is a vintage Ohaus U.S.A. stainless model (upper right of pic 2 on small slide weight bar) Rx balance. The stainless name is possibly due to the glass pans. It lists a capacity of 2 kilos (pic 9), has a plate for E.H. Sargent Co., Chicago, ILL (pic 3) and two slide weights (zero to 10 g and 0 to 200 g) (pic 2). This balance is approximately 14 inches wide and 7 inches tall with a depth (pan diameter) of 6 inches. It is quite heavy, weighing approximately 6 lbs, 10 oz. This balance still works surprisingly well, though not well enough to actually be used. It can be zeroed using the two zeroing weights on the threaded rod (pics 4,12 ), but the pans are not perfectly level when the pointer is in the zero position (pic 1). This MAY be very slightly adjustable using the two screws holding the scale plate to the balance (pics 4,12). There is apparently no mechanism (screw feet) to level the balance left to right or front to back. The balance also does not appear to have a lock/release mechanism so the pans are always floating freely. There is a frozen thumb screw (pics 4,6,8) in the back used to perhaps hold a rod with some function (maybe safe shipping). Using the small slide weight, I would wildly quesstimate a sensitivity requirement of 150-200 mg and a least weighable amount of 3-4 g. Of course, I do not recommend the actual use of this balance for anything other than as a collectable display item. A large amount of the black paint has been chipped off the cast iron base with some rusting (pics 2,3,4,6,7). There are multiple other rusted metal parts, especially those holding the pans to the balance (pics 2,4,6,7,11). Please contact me with any questions and thanks for looking!
