    CHATILLON'S SPRING BALANCE / HANGING
SCALE - NICE CONDITION, VINTAGE ITEM.
Also Known As:  A Hanging Scale, Hanging
Fish Scale, Hanging Farm Scale, Hanging
    Hardware Scale and Hanging Balance.
    QUANTITY꞉
ONE vintage Chatillon's Improved Spring Balance (i.e. scale).
    BRAND / MANUFACTURER꞉
    John Chatillon & Sons Company.
    PLACE OF MANUFACTURER꞉
    New York, United States.
    DIMENSIONS꞉
The scale's brass face measures 1.65” wide by 6.25” tall.  The hanging length of the scale / balance is approximately 10-inches.
    WEIGHT꞉
    8.7 ounces; 246 grams.
    SCALE CAPACITY꞉
    24-pounds.
    NOTES꞉
During our research, the majority of the Chatillon hanging balances / scales we looked at included the phrase: “Not Legal For Use In Trade.”  This particular balance / scale is devoid of that disclaimer.  We also noticed that the majority of the Chatillon hanging balances / scales we saw had six-rivets securing the face to the body.  The balances / scales with six-rivets all had tin bodies: Much weaker and more flimsy than the cast metal body this balance / scale employs.  This balance / scale only utilizes three-rivets to secure the face to the body.
    CONDITION꞉
The scale is functional.  The face appears to have been cleaned or polished and shows wear (likely from decades of use).  The back appears to have originally had a coating of black paint or had been chemically blackened by the manufacturer.  A century-long journey has resulted in a thin coating of rust on the case, the hang hook and the hang ring.
    ABOUT THE UNITED STATE'S PATENT꞉
Sadly, some sellers fail to properly research their items.  The United States Patent Number 71,980 issued on December 10, 1867 to John Chatillon of New York, New York wasn't for a scale, it was issued for a “Cast Metal Case for [a] Spring Balance” (i.e. a cast metal housing [and spring support pin] that enclosed the mechanical parts and wouldn't fall apart under heavy loads or repeated use).
From the Patent:  "The metallic plate has a perforated aperture for the reception of the pin that holds the spring. Claim:  A cast metal case for spring balances, when provide with a perforated or slotted upper head for the reception of the pin b, and when made substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described."  See the digital image in the listing's photographs.
    A LITTLE ABOUT CHATILLON꞉
