Description
Bermuda 1987 5 Oz Silver Proof Coin - Sea Venture Wreck with Box and COA.This is indeed a historic coin by the Singapore Mint.
The 1987 Bermuda 5oz Proof Silver Sea Venture Coin was minted by the Singapore Mint on behalf of government of the Bermuda Islands, and commemorates the 1609 wreck of the ship Sea Venture at Bermuda in a hurricane. The wreck led to the settlement of the islands and is featured on the national Coat of Arms. The Sea Venture is a purpose-built supply ship for the Jamestown Colony, and was sent to sea before her timbers had cured. When the ship hit a hurricane in the Western Atlantic, the caulking was forced from the seams, and the ship began sinking. The captain sighted land and purposefully steered the Sea Venture onto the reef to save the colonists and crew. Most of the colonists made it to Virginia in two makeshift boats, but the islands became a stopover place for trans-Atlantic ships and became a colony in 1707. Two of the cannon from Sea Venture were used in the the first fortifications of the island.
This solid 5oz silver coin is 65 mm in diameter and made of 99.9% fine silver. It comes in a royal blue presentation case with Certificate of Authenticity. Generally rates as one of the two best sea ship coin with astonishing details in the numismatic world.
