Beautiful antique boxed portable apothecary scale with weights and measuring spoon. Made by Godfrey & Cooke in 1800s in England. Solid flame mahogany box contains the hand held scale and two boxes of assorted weights.
Box measures 6 3/4" long x 3 1/4" deep x 1 1/4" tall. Grain and dram weights included in original storage boxes. Box is constructed of 3/16" solid flame mahogany and assembles using a miter joint. All hardware is original. Pasted on the inside of lid has a Weights and Measures and Table of Doses. Edge of box is marked with the maker's name. Box was cleaned and refinished with several coats of MinWax Satin Varnish and hand polished to a soft luster with 0000 steel wool and paste wax. Cork pads on bottom to protect bottom and for easier handling. Terrific collector's item.
History:
The pharmacy was established by Ambrose Godfrey Hanckwitz in 1680 (he dropped his last name when he emigrated to England to be Robert Boyle's assistant); In 1741 his sons Ambrose and John take over the business on their father's death. Godfrey died 1756 and business was taken over by his nephew until the nephew died in 1797. The business was then bought by Charles Gomond Cooke, and became Godfrey and Cooke.
