Antique French Kitchen Scales, Napoleon III Style Scales in Wood, Marble and Brass 1930s
Gorgeous French Antique kitchen scales in the style of Napoleon III. They date from the 30s. This was a popular style for scales in France. I have found a few of this style over the years but these are exceptional. They are solid and the wood is inlaid with an ebonised wood design on 3 sides. the scales sit on quirky little lions feet that are brass. The platters are solid brass and are sturdy, not lightweight like many.
A marble plateau sits on top, then the 2 little holders that hold the metal brass platters, both are stamped with a name and various numbers and signs. The scales have a viewing window front and back to see the 2 needles balance. I am selling them for display purposes as they do not weigh accurately now.
They are in good antique condition. The wood is a little faded and the color is going in places. The marble is a lovely pale gray veined marble and it has no cracks, one little chip on a corner but it does not detract and it is at the back, some little nibbles. The arms that hold the trays are a little rusty in places and are showing some wear. The trays have various numerals stamped on them but I have been unable to trace the history of the mark, they have little signs of patina and oxidisation but could be further polished if you wish. I have a kitchen scale addiction. I have a set of scales like this in my lounge that are larger and hold candles. I also have a set of butchers scales on my kitchen island that I use as a fruit bowl, why not it is great to put these old things to use. They would also look great if you have a large bathroom, they could hold your decorative soap. They would look great on a country farmhouse table as candle holders, they would look cute holding teat lights. I am sure you could think of even more ideas!
